Rumor: Nissan Pathfinder to revert to its body-on-frame formula in 3 years

According to Automotive News citing unofficial sources, Nissan is planning on making the Pathfinder a frame-based off-roader again, sometime around mid-2029. It had been frame-based for three generations since introduction, but switched to a simpler unibody design for Gen.4.

The sources claim that the current – fifth – generation of the Pathfinder will continue to be made even as the sixth one arrives. It will allegedly get another facelift down the line, too. In the USA where the current Pathfinder is made, it’s a solid performer for Nissan with 101,598 examples sold last year.

With Ivan Espinosa assuming the office of Nissan CEO last year, the company ditched the entirety of its EV plans in North America and adjusted its focus to prioritize practical SUVs and trucks instead. The production is localized in Canton, Mississippi, with the sources saying that’s where the new Pathfinder will be made, too.

Rumor has it that the SUV will be first offered with a petrol V6 and later as a hybrid. Chances are good that it will get a suffix to its name, like “Pro-4X” or “Grand,” to set it apart from the unibody version.
