Car tuning

Ever fancied driving a Subaru WRX STi pickup truck?

This 16-year-old Subaru WRX STi was turned into a pickup by Smyth Performance, a veteran of such conversions. The car is now on sale with slight drivetrain and chassis mods, and the betting has been lingering at just $11,000.

The tuner cuts the body past the b-pillars and puts a cargo bed there complete with a tailgate and aluminum lining. The size of the bed is 2 x 0.9 meters (6.56 x 2.95 feet). The width corresponds to the space between the wheel arches. The cabin only has two seats left with a glass partition separating it from the bed.

The auction holder praises ‘production-quality’ craftsmanship in the project, highlighting the fact that the truck looks like a mass-market model.

Power comes from a 2.5-liter turbo engine partnered with a six-speed manual transmission and all-wheel-drive system with three differentials. In its stock form, the unit doesn’t go beyond 300 PS (296 hp / 221 kW), but the seller mentions a reprogrammed ECU and improved intake and exhaust, suggesting a moderate power boost.

Elsewhere, the light truck rides on new wheels, makes use of Brembo brakes and offers an audio system based on Alpine components.

With over 286,000 kilometers (177,700 miles) behind it, we are not surprised the car has failed to attract higher bids so far.
