Toyota’s 2026 Century sedan breaks free from its parent brand as it debuts in Japan

Now that Toyota once again relinquished control over the Century sub-brand, the facelifted Century sedan has finally debuted in Japan. It doesn’t look much different from its predecessor dating back to 2018 and uses the same hybrid powertrain, but costs considerably more thanks to ADAS improvements.

The biggest novelty arguably comes in the form of Proactive Driving Assist, a system that enables the car to adjust its acceleration automatically based on the proximity of other vehicles. It also allows it to steer slightly to avoid impacts with sudden obstacles. Pedestrian and cyclist recognition have been improved, and the Toyota Safety Sense package version has been upgraded.

On the outside, the new Century saloon looks pretty much the same as its predecessor from seven years ago. Inside, it now ships with an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen preinstalled as standard instead of being listed as optional. All propulsion comes from the old 5.0-liter V8 with 381 PS (376 hp / 280 kW) assisted by an e-motor contributing its own 224 PS (221 hp / 165 kW).

Like before, the hybrid output stays capped at a rather conservative 431 PS (425 hp / 317 kW). The drive stays fixed on the rear axle with no opportunity for AWD.

Prices start from 23 million Japanese Yen (roughly $147,500), representing a 3-million Yen ($19,228) hike over the old version.
