New Toyota Land Cruiser Prado bows with a fresh design, decent engines

Toyota has finally lifted the veil over the next generation of Land Cruiser Prado. The SUV is scheduled to go on sale worldwide in the first half of 2024 and will be known in some countries as the Land Cruiser 250.

The newcomer shares its underpinnings with the Lexus GX, but the exterior is completely different and retro-inspired. The same applies to the engine lineup: there will be five engine options, but the cylinder count will not exceed four. In its most affordable version, the SUV will get a 2.7-liter mill rated at 163 PS (161 hp / 120 kW) and 246 Nm (181 lb-ft) of torque. This version will only be available in Eastern Europe and Japan, though.

The Western countries will enjoy a 2.8-liter diesel variant with 204 PS (201 hp / 150 kW) and 500 Nm (368 lb-ft) of torque at its disposal. Those in the market for a particularly powerful diesel off-roader may get the same car with an added 48-volt starter (mild hybrid). As an alternative, there will be a 2.4-liter petrol option rated at 281 PS (277 hp / 207 kW) and 430 Nm (317 lb-ft) of torque.

Crowning the new Prado lineup is a plug-in hybrid SUV that uses a 2.4-liter engine, an electric motor and a modest-sized battery. This version will be available in the USA and China. Toyota has not revealed any specifics yet, including sprint times.

The interior looks laconic and resembles that of the Toyota Tacoma, but takes advantage of some original parts. The drive mode selector is fashioned as a rocker and there are plenty of hardware controls around for HVAC and other in-car functions. The infotainment display is 8 inches large by default, but higher trim levels raise the diagonal size to 12.3 inches.
