Thomas Schaefer, CEO of Volkswagen Passenger Cars, revealed that the company teamed up with Rivian to design the next generation of its Golf hot hatch.
The U.S.-based electric automaker will assist Volkswagen with building the Golf Mk9 on a new platform called SSP, which is completely electric by design. The release date is penciled in for 2029 right now, with the new Golf set to phase out the current ID.3.
There is some good news for those who wouldn’t have their Golf in any other form than gas-powered. The current, eighth generation will linger in production for several more years and will continue to be available even when the EV arrives – at least, this is how VW plans it. According to Schaefer, it might stay with us all the way until 2035, when the EU plans to start enforcing its ICE ban.
