VW ID. Polo announced for 2026, GTI version also underway

Volkswagen has revealed its next fully electric vehicle: the ID. Polo. Based on the ID. 2all Concept from before, it is slated to go on sale next year and become the company’s first EV to get the GTI badge.

Not much is known about the electric Polo right now. The automaker is updating its naming conventions right now, so it needed an example and thus made the announcement. Moving forward, there will be no numbered ID vehicles like “ID.4” or “ID.7”. Instead, the company plans to use normal-sounding names for its EVs, many of them borrowed from the ICE lineup. The ID. Polo will be the first of the kind, but it will only be a matter of time until we get an ID. Golf, VW says. Traditional ICE cars will stay in production, so you shouldn’t worry about the electrification removing your favorite model from the market.

This explanation comes from Martin Sander, Member of the Board of Directors at Volkswagen Passenger Cars. He argues that the names in the all-electric ID. lineup need to evoke emotions in order to be memorable and marketable. According to him, “Polo” is a prime example of a strong name embodying “reliability, individuality and history.”

While all technical details will have to wait, we already have these official photos of the battery-powered Polo duo wearing pre-production wrap. As you can see, the car actually looks virtually identical to the ID. 2all Concept. The GTI version boasts slightly more pronounced bumpers, a larger spoiler, different wheels and what looks like lowered suspension.

In earlier news, Volkswagen revealed that all of its upcoming affordable EVs would be based on a cost-efficient platform known as the MEB Entry. All cars would be restricted to just one motor. In the case of the ID. Polo GTI, we expect around 228 PS (225 hp / 168 kW) at the crank and a €25,000 starting price.
