Xpeng G7 gets a range-extender version

The Xpeng G7 was originally launched in China as a pure EV this summer, but the automaker must have realized that making it a hybrid would improve sales.

The newly announced EREV version of the crossover looks slightly different from its all-electric counterpart. It has actual air intakes at the front, active louvers in the front bumper, exhaust tips at the back and a solid brake light strip instead of three separate taillights.

In terms of size, the hybrid is 26 mm (1 inch) longer than the EV at 4,918 mm (192.1 inches) long. The width, height and wheelbase stay the same at 1,925, 1655 and 2,890 mm, respectively (75.2, 64.6 and 112.9 inches).

Little has changed inside unless you count an added footrest on the front passenger seat. The instrument panel is projected onto the windshield in AR mode, while the infotainment screen is large and installed in a landscape orientation. An AI-powered voice assistant and a handful of ADAS are included in the base spec.

A 150-PS (148-hp / 110-kW) 1.5-liter petrol engine under the hood isn’t connected to the wheels and only supplies electricity for the main 296-PS (292-hp / 218-kW) motor on the rear axle. A 55.8-kWh battery pack lets you cover up to 430 km (267 miles) in all-electric mode according to the local CLTC range standard. Fill up the tank and charge the battery, and you’ll be looking at 1,704 km (1,058 miles) of available range.

All prices remain to be announced, but the G7 EV starts from the equivalent of U.S. $27,950. The hybrid can be expected to cost considerably less than that.
