Those eager to grab the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 “Farewell Edition” are facing unprecedented greed taxes from dealerships, Carscoops reports. Apparently, with the MSRP at $96,666, the premiums currently lie in the range of $100,000–250,000.
Dodge forums and Reddit threads are also abuzz with reports of ludicrously overpriced Challengers. A customer from Tennessee who wanted to buy one was asked to fork over a record-high quarter of a million USD above list price, meaning they were essentially charged a Lamborghini price for a Dodge muscle car.
Other adventurous dealers have been caught in the act accepting the payment (complete with a giant premium) and then selling the car to someone else provided they offered more. Dealerships technically aren’t permitted to do so, but one possible way to circumvent the restrictions is for one of the employees to buy out the car and then sell it back to the showroom for a “used resale”.
As atrocious as these reports seem, Dodge did everything on its own part to hype up the final edition of the muscle car before its retirement. In it, the Challenger transformed into an actual supercar packing up to 1,039 PS (1,025 hp / 764 kW) and plenty of drag-strip-specific features. It is also expected to be the world’s last petrol-powered Challenger version, so it carries something like an iconic status despite the rather liberal production run of 3,300 units.
