Ford Transit Connect makes a fine home on wheels

Ford has introduced the Nugget, a campervan with Transit Connect underpinnings. Prices start from €76,500, and the first shipments are scheduled for the next spring.

On the outside, the van has a roll-up awning at the right-hand side and a pop-up roof with a bed for two underneath. The tailgate can be optioned with a bike rack.

Interior specialist Westfalia designed the living area. The company decided to divide it into multiple separate spaces – a dining room, a kitchen and a bedroom.

The dining space is formed by swiveling the front seats around to face a folding table. A heated sofa can also be put here for a premium. The kitchen is rather well-equipped even in the base spec with a stove, a fridge, a sink with hot water and assorted storage cabinets. One more optional area can be arranged at the tailgate with a camping tent and an outdoor shower.

Accessing features like climate control and lighting is possible via phone or a dedicated 7-inch touchscreen display. The infotainment system comes with a 13-inch screen, and all devices display the remaining battery level.

In its simplest form, the Nugget comes powered by a 2.0-liter, 170-PS (168-hp / 125-kW) diesel engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Paying more will get you a hybrid van with a 2.5-liter petrol engine, a 232-PS (229 hp / 171 kW) electric motor and an 11.8-kWh traction battery only good for 50 km (31 miles) of all-electric range. All-wheel drive will become available later.
