Five specs announced for the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

As soon as it starts shipping, the new S-Class will be available with two gasoline six-cylinders, two diesels and a V8 to choose from. All five engines benefit from electric starter-generators that assist them during initial acceleration and strive to save fuel.

The two diesel specs – S 350 d and S 400 d – both have six cylinders, but their displacement and horsepower rating remain unannounced. For reference, the gas-powered S 500 produces 440 Ps (324 kW) and 520 Nm (380 lb-ft). It needs 4.6 seconds to reach 100 km/h (62 mph) from standstill.

The S 580 spec will temporarily serve as the top-end model with its 4.0-liter V8 producing 612 PS (450 kW) and its electric motor contributing another 200 PS (150 kW). It will be able to sprint 0-100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. Superior performance versions may follow later.

The 2021 Mercedes S-Class will debut on September 2, 2020 and go on sale in Europe before the end of the year.
