4th-gen Nissan Murano breaks cover with AT instead of CVT

Nissan has just revealed the fourth generation of its Murano crossover. It now resembles the all-electric Ariya in terms of design and packs a four-cylinder engine with an automatic transmission, sending the old V6 with a CVT to retirement.

Considering how many drivers were utterly disgusted with the variable transmission in the old Murano, this is arguably good news. The new engine is a 2.0-liter turbo mill supporting variable compression ratios and pushing out 241 PS (238 hp / 177 kW) under optimal condition. The transmission is a classic nine-speed design.

Compared to the third-gen Murano that reached the market a decade ago, the new version is about the same length and height. It is 67 mm (2.6 in) wider and has 51 mm (2 in) of extra ground clearance, though, so it should have a much easier time navigating rough terrain. Nissan says the added width translates into more space for the three passengers on the rear bench seat. Like before, the car is a five-seater with no other options available.

A large infotainment cluster composed of two 12.3-inch screens dominates the dash. Almost all physical buttons are gone, replaced with capacitive ones, and the front seats now offer massage functions in addition to heating and ventilation. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay finally go wireless in this generation.

Trim-wise, buyers will be considering a HUD, a 10-speaker Bose audio system and 21-inch wheels. AWD is another paid option in North America, where the Murano goes FWD by default. 64-color ambient lighting and semi-aniline leather upholstery are also mentioned under extra features.

All pricing details will be revealed closer to the sales launch.
