Enthusiast turns BMW M3 into estate car

Not every car owner would trust a car design atelier to modify the vehicle exactly the way he or she wants it. Some people prefer to take matters into their own hands instead.

That’s what a man from Netherlands, frustrated about the absence of an estate car in the BMW M3 family, decided to do. He took a 340i xDrive and turned it into what he called the “BMW F81 M3 Touring”.

He ditched the stock engine, replacing it with the superior S55. He also upgraded the injection system and the engine control chip, bringing about a performance increase from 444 hp (331 kW) to 523 hp (390 kW).

The two upgrades have enabled the fan-made BMW F81 M3 Touring to surpass the M3 CS in terms of raw engine power – quite a feat to achieve, considering that the latter does 0-100 km/h (0-60 mph) in under four seconds and accelerates to a top speed of 280 km/h (174 mph).

Not quite done with the modding yet, the man also installed the M3 Competition package, swapped the old exhaust system with a nicer-looking, louder-roaring one by M Performance, borrowed the hood cover from an M4 GTS, installed new shock absorbers and the steering wheel and made a few interior improvements.

The costs of the job remained undisclosed.
