BMW says farewell to its quad-turbo diesel, announces Final Edition

BMW says it will put its strongest diesel engine out of production in September, piecing together a limited batch of X5 and X7 models with it under the hood.

The three-liter, six-cylinder B57D30S0 mill debuted in 2016 under the hood of the BMW 750d, marking the first time in history a production car shipped with a quad-turbo diesel engine. Capable of 400 PS (295 kW) and 760 Nm (561 lb-ft) of torque, it grants the SUV excellent acceleration dynamics, letting it hit 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds. Fuel consumption is also pretty low, enabling certain models to cover nearly 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) on a full tank.

Unfortunately, the engine also proved exceptionally expensive in production and maintenance, ultimately leading to BMW pulling the plug on it. As a means of saying “farewell”, the company will be releasing the X5 & X7 M50d Final Edition, complete with Laserlight headlights, comfortable seats, Crafted Clarity glass details, and much more.

Customers in Europe will be able to pre-order the Final Edition later this summer.
