The new Audi SQ8 is a diesel hybrid

Powered by a 4.0-liter turbocharged diesel V8 pumping out 435 horsepower (324 kilowatts), the Audi SQ7 counts among the best-equipped diesel SUVs around. The Bentley Bentayga and the newly announced Audi SQ8 take advantage of the same engine model, but the latter is actually a hybrid.

The car features a mild-hybrid system based on a starter generator that draws its power from a dedicated 48V battery array and produces 8 kilowatts (11 hp) of its own. The engine start/stop function automatically deactivates the main diesel unit and switches to the electric motor whenever the car coasts or decelerates below 22 km/h (14 mph). The same lithium-ion battery also supplies power to active roll stabilizers and an electric turbocharger.

The powertrain relies on an eight-speed automatic transmission and a Torsen differential to deliver the power to all four wheels. Accelerating from zero to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes 4.8 seconds, and the maximum speed is capped at 250 km/h (155 mph).

On the outside, the SQ8 Hybrid is easily distinguishable thanks to its unique radiator grille with vertical fins and silver bezel.
